Eve’s Glory

Glory from the past pride from the present

In my new project, I intended to explore the visual impossibility of presenting women in uniforms. Women in fashion magazines, TV commercials, and mainstream media, are usually dressed in a way that speaks naturally to a structure of social expectations characterized by a sharp division between masculinity and femininity, dominance and passivity, toughness and delicacy. I see that such one- dimensional way of presenting women risks failing to capture those who are in a state of internal or, amongst all, external obstacles in their full complexity.

I play with the visual incongruity of women dressed in military uniforms presented in a faithful detailed atmosphere. I intentionally keep their facial features natural and delicate by using dramatic lighting, inspired by the paintings and photographs of that era.

This project intends to visually explore gender barriers, it is inspired by the way in which the role of women has changed in history. With this project, i ask the question: after 100 years from WWI, how these visual would be perceived by the world today? This project plays with a historical façade, but by engaging the audience with the juxtaposition of modern women and historical uniforms indeed criticizes a history of humanity in which ordinary women played few historical roles, or their achievements has been ignored by men who wrote our history.

I collected the original military uniforms shown in these images from from antique shops in several european countries, local and online military surplus shops, eBay, and private collectors. It took me 3 months to study the uniforms and the orders attached to them in order to present something historically correct that would convince the eyes of a historian or a professional in this field. The shooting process took place in palaces, historic townhalls and salons in and around Berlin.
